Cat skiing terrain

in Ridder, Kazakhstan

The West Altai Mountains near Ridder, Kazakhstan, are like a smaller, wilder cousin of Interior BC — same dry powder and mix of trees and alpine, but with a more compact scale and Siberian feel.

Powder paradise below tree line

The West Altai Mountains near Ridder, Kazakhstan, are like a smaller, wilder cousin of Interior BC — same dry powder and mix of trees and alpine, but with a more compact scale and Siberian feel.

There are at least 7 distinct and named mountain sub-ranges here, including one shaped by a prehistoric meteorite impact crater! Three of these ranges offer vast areas for cat skiing, each with up to a dozen of snowcat-accessible bowls. With multiple aspects to choose from, there’s always a slope in condition. Every bowl has 3-6 unique lines, giving you plenty of untracked powder to shred before the next snowstorm hits!

The lodge and the town of Ridder sit at around 700 m, while the highest peaks top out at 2,776 m. There are no glaciers and we rarely venture into exposed alpine terrain where wind affects snow quality — but Ridder delivers some of the best glade skiing on the continent!

A huge larch tree on Ridder slopes

The tree line is at 1,800-1,900m, and most of the riding happens below that, where slopes are sheltered from wind and sun. No down days here — we ski powder no matter the weather!

And while elsewhere alpine forests tend to be dense, the slopes in Ridder, Kazakhstan, are dotted with sparse conifer trees, free of undergrowth — perfect for fun skiing and playing with small terrain features. Floating through deep feathery powder between perfectly spaced giant larch trees is one of the best things you can do in life. Once you’ve tried this type of skiing, there is no going back!
